Judy Onofrio’s eye-boggling mosaic sculptures are spectacles of whimsy and engineering. Her works present a delightful synthesis of form, color , composition, surface ornamentation and storytelling — all of which is proffered in impeccable craftsmanship and mischievous humor.

Employing traditional mosaic technique, she attaches buttons, beads, costume jewelry, shells, trinkets, found objects, fake fruit and flowers, and broken ceramic tile onto the surfaces of wood forms which serve as the understructures for her sculptures. Onofrio is basically selftaught and finds inspiration in folk art and the creations of other self-taught artists who make visionary environments.

In a felicitous tribute to Onofrio’s creativity , Erika L. Binger writes: [Her] art, with its bits and pieces of everyday items and universal stories of relationships and memory dispels the preconception that art is what you see when you visit a museum . You can’t view her work, argues Ms Binger, without being inspired to make a comment, tell a story, laugh out loud — or even try your own hand at creating [assemblage art].

“Her imaginative forces are drawn from her private world of dreams, fantasies and absurdities. Our lives are enhanced by her singular voice which takes us into places we have never been.” -Helen W. Drutt English
