My work ethos centers on taking "boxes" beyond the ordinary
while at the same time trying to maintain a commitment to
design principles so as to integrate form, color and meaning.
The use of wood as a medium is secondary to my main purpose
which is to represent emotions in an entertaining and engaging
way. Although my work begins with a box shape, it becomes
anthropomorphic the moment I apply appendages.
Color sets the emotional tone and provides visual interest. You will
not find highly figured woods in my work. Rather, I prefer light
colored, fine-grained wood such as pine and basswood. My
intention is not to hide, but to de-emphasize the wood grain so as
to draw attention to form and meaning . Color alternates with
natural wood to provide contrast.
Whale of a Tale (2008) can be interpreted in many ways, but for
me it represents the big one that (almost) certainly got away.
Where am I headed with all this? I'm not sure, but the goal is
laughter, amusement and the interest of the viewer.
